If you’re like us and have started on a journey to healthier living, then inevitably you’ll start thinking about the effects of what you are putting on your skin. Chemicals found in mainstream makeup lines have a sneaky way of being ingested and absorbed by our bodies through our largest organ, our skin.
Natural makeup and lipsticks have come along way in the last decade and have moved from earth-mother-in-hessian to more of a luxe-organic-goddess vibe. Brands like Inika Organic and Lük Beautifoods are at the forefront of this movement.
Celeste and I absolutely adore Inika Organic natural makeup for its range and coverage, and Lük for their moisturising lipsticks using natural colours and food grade ingredients. And this is coming from two self-confessed beauty junkies. We used to love all the department store makeup counter ranges and then we started doing a bit of research about what actually goes into those products. It scared us and is one of the reasons we are so passionate about what we do here at Natural Supply Co.
1. Lead
You would never eat lead intentionally, but did you know that a few years ago, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found lead in over half of the 33 brands of lipstick they tested? Lead is a proven neurotoxin and has been linked to miscarriage, reduced fertility and delays in the onset of puberty for females. Umm, no thank you, not on my lips please!
2. Phthlates
Phthlates are a group of chemicals that are used to make products more flexible or better able to hold in colour and scent. They can be found in anything from deodorant to nail polish to scented lip balm.
They may be disruptive to the endocrine system, the system responsible for producing our hormones. Such interference can lead to developmental, reproductive, and neurological damage.
Part of the problem is that these chemicals can listed as “fragrance” on ingredients lists. Companies claim their fragrance formulas are a “trade secret,” and this means they don’t have to specify on the label which ingredients are included.
By avoiding products that list “fragrance” and choosing ones that use plant oils and essences for scent, you will be doing your body a huge favour.
3. Parabens
This last one is probably the biggest one to avoid. Most of us have heard that parabens are bad but here’s why. They are the most widely used preservatives in cosmetics, and they have no troubles penetrating your skin and messing with your hormones as they can mimic oestrogen.
They also interfere with our reproductive and immune systems and have been found in human breast cancer tissue. As someone who has a history of breast cancer in my family, I am super conscious of avoiding parabens in my makeup and skincare.
If you are thinking of detoxing your makeup bag and want some advice, email me on sarah@naturalsupplyco.com. We love helping people with healthier alternatives that keep the luxe in and the chemicals out.
