Kester Black is a Melbourne B-Corp beauty company that make vegan, 10-free and breathable, water permeable nail polishes. Cool, huh! But... what does that actually mean?
WHAT ACTUALLY IS WATER PERMEABLE NAIL POLISH?
Water permeable polish is made from a formulation which allows oxygen molecules to transfer from one side of the nail polish layer to the other. This occurrence happens only on a molecular level and is not visible to the naked eye, making DIY checks inaccurate.
Tests have shown that if oxygen can permeate a nail polish film, then hydrogen atoms attached to the oxygen can also travel with it to the other side of the film. This action enables water to transfer from one side to the other, hence making the nail polish water permeable and breathable.
WHY CHOOSE WATER PERMEABLE?
Using water permeable nail polish can help to improve the health of your nails and the quality of your manicure. This new and improved base allows nails to behave naturally and grow without the restrictions of non-breathable polishes. This has also made the product available to a wider market of consumers, including Muslim women who choose to wear water permeable polish.
HOW IS IT TESTED?
A nail polish film sample is put inside a diffusion chamber which separates the top half of the chamber from the bottom (as seen below). Oxygen then flows into the top half of the chamber and an oxygen-free carrier gas (i.e. nitrogen) flows into the bottom on the other side of the film. Once the oxygen permeates the nail polish film, we know that the polish is breathable. The experiment is carried out according to ASTM D 3985 and ISO 15105-2 standards. These exacting standards have far greater technical relevance than the coffee filter paper test, which is a highly inaccurate representation of the chemical reaction.
WHY HAS KESTER BLACK MADE WATER PERMEABLE NAIL POLISH?
We have an ongoing vision to improve the quality of all of our products wherever possible. Not only have we improved the quality of our nail polishes, but we’ve also made them available to Muslim women who choose to wear breathable, water permeable nail polish.
ARE KESTER BLACK WATER PERMEABLE NAIL POLISHES 10-FREE, AUSTRALIAN MADE AND CERTIFIED CRUELTY FREE?
Yes, the new base has not compromised any of our standards, accreditations or 10-Free formula.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
We can think of molecules that make up our water permeable polish like marbles in a jar (please see below). When water is added to a layer of nail polish, the H2O has the ability to penetrate the molecular structure (marbles) and flow through the other side of the nail polish layer. For this reason, the number of nail polish layers does not affect the water permeability of the product.
INFORMATION & ACCREDITATIONS
The Kester Black breathable/water permeable formulation is a major improvement on any existing breathable nail polish products already on the market. It has the ability to allow water penetration on a molecular level once it has been applied to nails. Because of the breathability and water permeability of this product Muslim women can wear it if they chose to.
All Kester Black products are proudly made in Australia and the new water permeable base has in no way compromised our professional standards, ethics and company values.
Our high shine, chip-resistant nail polish follows the five-free formula meaning it contains no toluene, DBP (also known as phthalates), formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin or camphor.
All Kester Blacknail polish comes with Choose Cruelty Free (CCF), Cruelty Free International and Vegan Society certifications. All water permeable colours will be marked with the water permeable logo.
ARE ALL KESTER BLACK POLISHES NOW MADE WITH THE NEW BASE?
Yes, they are. Woo hoo!!
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WATER PERMEABLE AND BREATHABLE NAIL POLISH?
There is no difference between breathable nail polish and water permeable nail polish. Essentially, if a nail polish is breathable, that means it also has the ability for water molecules to penetrate through its formula.
IS WATER PERMEABLE NAIL POLISH STILL PERMEABLE AFTER MULTIPLE COATS?
Yes, even after multiple coats, the nail polish will remain water permeable. The reason for this is because the formation of molecules build in a way that allows for water to continue to pass through. In most instances, this is not a visible occurrence because it happens on a molecular level. If we think of it as marbles in a jar; the more marbles there are does not effect the water seeping down to the bottom.
WHAT IS THE DURABILITY OF WATER PERMEABLE NAIL POLISH?
Kester Black water permeable nail polish has the same durability as all original Kester Black colours. In fact, using water permeable nail polish can help to improve the health of your nails and the quality of your manicure. The permeable base allows nails to behave naturally and grow without the restrictions of non-breathable bases.
HOW DO I REMOVE IT?
Water permeable nail polish is removed in the same way as all original Kester Black nail polishes. Our Non-Acetone remover, Water Based remover or any generic product will effectively remove the polish with ease.
IS THE WATER PERMEABLE NAIL POLISH MORE OR LESS TOXIC THAN NON BREATHABLE POLISH?
Breathable, water permeable nail polish is no more or less chemically enhanced than any other Kester Black nail polish product.
IS WATER PERMEABLE NAIL POLISH WATER SOLUBLE?
No. Kester Black water permeable nail polishes are not able to be dissolved by/in water.
