Marimekko - now at NSC: it's ethical, beautiful and we are so excited!

We are so excited to share our big news - Natural Supply Co is now stocking Marimekko - all our dreams have come true!  We have loved this brand for years and have worked hard to become a stockist so we can share all that colourful, design-y goodness with you too.

Marimekko has its beginnings in 1950's Finland where a husband and wife team started designing colourful fabrics to make loose-fitting clothing for women. This was the total opposite of the 50's style of the nipped waist and full skirt. Jackie Kennedy (hello, girl crush) started wearing Marimekko dresses while she was pregnant and helped to launch the brand into world wide fame. Since then, the brand has expanded into other things such as homewares, bags, shoes and towels. Marimekko's designs and shapes continue to be loved by people who appreciate aesthetics and functionality in fashion and homeware. Which is us!

So how does Marimekko fit into our requirement for only stocking ethical, sustainable brands, we hear you ask? Good question...

1. Marimekko has its own printing mill in Helsinki which prints all Marimekko fabrics sold by the metre, all their kitchen textiles and some of the fabric used for bags and clothing. The majority of Marimekko products are manufactured in Europe (Finland, Sweden, Lithuania, Estonia) and about a third are manufactured by a skilled supplier network in Asia.

2. Marimekko pride themselves on having long-term partnerships with ethical suppliers and are guided by stringent sourcing principles. All suppliers must comply with the International Labour Organisations Conventions and the European Business Social Compliance Initiative. They monitor compliance with own factory visits in Europe and use specialised independent auditors to monitor factories outside of Europe.

3. Marimekko are committed to respected human rights in all their operations. Their approach is based on the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and guides their Supplier Code of Conduct for all supply chains. This means they do not accept child or forced labour and continually monitor supply chain themselves and with the help of third party auditors. They have joined the International Cotton Pledge Initiative started by the Responsible Sourcing Network and do not currently accept cotton from countries such as Uzbekistan, where use of child labour in cotton production still exists.

We love Marimekko because they do not produce trend-driven, fast-fashion goods. Their approach is all about quality over quantity and timeless, classic designs that will stand the test of time. This is refreshing in our current age of disposable fashion from the likes of Zara, Asos and other retailers of this ilk. I have been guilty of buying something online from these kind of retailers, wearing it a couple of times and then disposing of it after the poor-quality stitching comes undone or the cotton pills. This doesn't happen with Marimekko!

So we will be stocking a range of their beautiful tote bags and reusable shopping bags as well as some selected homewares. Now, living a sustainable and ethical life doesn't have to equal hessian sacks and health-food-store brown anymore. We can't wait to introduce you to the wonderfully colourful world of Marimekko.

Love the Natural Supply Co girls xxx
