Palm-oil free products

Palm oil is a hot topic, and for good reason: the palm industry in South East Asia is causing the destruction of Orangutans and their environmental eco-systems, and it is completely unnecessary.

To make our customers aware of the palm oil content in any products stocked at Natural Supply Co, we've put together this list of information provided to us by suppliers.

We will endeavour to keep this list updated as new brands are added. If you ever have a question about any of this, please feel free to email us (info@naturalsupplyco.com) and we will find out anything we can!

These ingredients can be found in our Refining Cleanser, 2 in 1: Face Scrub + Mask, Ultimate Face Cream and Ultimate Hand + Body Lotion. I am making sure any future formulations do not contain any palm oil derivatives.

Dirt: Our product does contain an ingredient made from Palm Oil, but of the sustainable variety. We believe that this is the best stance we can take to not be part of the problem.

Our supplier uses MB certified (RSPO) palm oil, meaning the palm oil in their product contributes to the production of sustainable palm oil.

Using these suppliers means we can bring you high grade performance, with the knowledge that our supply is being monitored against issues such as deforestation and poor workers rights.

Our suppliers use certified palm oil to make surfactants. Surfactants are necessary in cleaning. They can attach to both oil and water, which means they can lift the grime from your clothes.

Downunder Wash Co.does not contain any palm oil or derivatives of palm oil.

Dr Bronner's: Organic palm oil is a primary ingredient in Dr Bronner’s Castile Bar Soaps. Palm oil gives the bar its hardness and balances the lathering power of coconut oil, while keeping the soap from softening and dissolving too fast.

Dr Bronner's palm oil is produced ethically from sustainably-harvested palm fruits in Ghana’s Eastern Region. The project is owned and coordinated by Serendipalm, Dr Bronner’s sister company in Ghana. They buy palm fruits exclusively from 500 small organic family farms. These farms were developed without the widespread clear-cutting of rainforest and resulting devastation to local primates that are common nowadays with many of the newer, larger-scale palm oil plantations. Dr Bronner's pay the farmers fair prices for their palm fruits and support them with mulch and organic agriculture training, thus helping them to improve soil fertility and profitability. The 250+ workers in the oil mill, primarily local women, enjoy working conditions and compensation uncommon in this industry – and in an area that has few reliable jobs to offer to its growing rural population.

Serendipalm now supplies Fair Trade and organic palm oil to Dr Bronner’s, as well as three renowned European Fair Trade companies. For each shipment of palm oil, Serendipalm receives a Fair Trade premium. The premium has been used for a range of community development projects, such as drilling wells and installing tanks to provide community-operated water systems, building public toilet facilities, rebuilding a pedestrian bridge, installing lighting, and providing school supplies to the staff members’ children. These projects are selected by a committee with broad-based representation and offer great opportunities for targeted community development projects for which there are otherwise no funds available.

Dr Bronner's believe that the technical characteristics of palm oil give it an important place in organic foods and personal care products. With global demand for palm oil surging, and the realization that large-scale palm oil plantations are often neither “green” nor “fair,” their project is expanding to supply growing demand. It demonstrates that small-scale production of such commodities can indeed be fair, profitable and sustainable.

ECO. modern essentials: the products we stock at Natural Supply Co do not contain palm oil or its derivatives. However, palm oil is used across some products made by ECO. modern essentials, sourced from sustainable plantations.

Eye of Horus: At Eye of Horus, we do not have Palm Oil in our products however we have made a commitment to responsible sourcing of Palmitic Acid, a palm oil derivative ingredient. 100% of the Palmitic Acid used in our Goddess Mascara is obtained through our supplier on the Malay Peninsula and has been certified sustainable by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). Sustainable Palm Oil plantations in areas that are not rain forests such as the Malay Peninsula, support local farmers, free the exploitation of indigenous communities, ensure sensitive rainforests are not deforested and endangered species are protected.

Recently we were featured in Slow Magazine as part of their 'Clean and Green' feature on palm oil free/sustainable palm oil sourcing for products.

Frank Green: does not contain any palm oil or derivatives of palm oil.

Funday Natural Sweets: does not contain any palm oil or derivatives of palm oil.

Go Bamboo: does not contain any palm oil or derivatives of palm oil.

Hunter Lab:"only the Exfoliating Hand and Body Bar is made from a base of sustainably sourced Sodium Palmate and Sodium Palm Kernalate. The supplier is certified by the WWF, using only pre-existing and non-deforested plantations.

The reason we chose Palm Oil is of course for the incredible benefits it has for our skin, including incredibly high levels of vitamins A & E, and because it helps restore the natural oils which can be removed from high-er pH soap, but more than that it is the perfect natural soap base because it allows us to create an incredibly effective soap where the Glycerin is not removed.

We are all about sustainably and ethically sourced ingredients, and took the decision to use Palm Oil in our Body Bar very seriously. In the end we were 100% satisfied the supplier was not contributing to African/Brazilian deforestation, nor having any negative effect on their region or their community."

INIKA: INIKA products do not contain Palm Oil although some contain an ethically sourced derivative, which has been certified by Roundtable of Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). This certification is a not-for-profit association that develops and implement global standards for Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO). INIKA remains wholeheartedly committed to preserving our precious environment and respects all those, animals included, who reside within it.

The Dirt Company: "Dirt does contain an ingredient made from Palm Oil, but of the sustainable variety. We believe that this is the best stance we can take to not be part of the problem.

Palm oil has a bad rap because of the way it is sourced. Palm oil is extracted from palm fruit grown on the African palm oil tree. The palm oil tree is abundant in forests where the climate is hot and wet. Native wildlife is abundant in these same forests. Many palm oil manufacturers farm native forests to keep up with their production demand, which has had a devastating effect on many local species, including the Orangutan and the Sumatran tiger. In addition, workers in these regions are not compensated fairly. This MUST stop.

However, increasing pressure from consumers has encouraged a few manufacturers to change the source of their palm oil.

It is sometimes difficult to identify what each ingredient is doing in common household products. SLES / SES / AES / ALES / SCS / SDS are all commonly used surfactants.

The main alternative to palm oil is coconut oil, which currently does not have any regulation - so the risk we take if we use it, is it comes from deforestation.

Coconut, Soy, and other alternatives are slower to yield, and take more resources and space to grow (reports suggest between 4 - 10 times more land), which makes any other vegetable crop a less sustainable, and more devastating choice in terms of deforestation from required land.  You can read about the devastating effect boycotting palm will have here. The problem starts not with Palm Oil, but with the huge demand for vegetable oils.

It is our true belief that a raw material that's being monitored and facing immense pressure like palm is will be our best bet at a sustainable supply chain. Switching to a less known commodity, hoping customers don't worry any more about where their raws come from, is something that doesn't align with our values."

Please quit hiding behind the RSPO label. Reports have come out showing there is little to no validity to the RSPO. Many companies who say they are RSPO use little to no sustainable palm oil. And, sustainable palm oil is not much better than non-sustainable. I do appreciate your transparency on all your ingredients, though.
